This past week NASCAR changed the Past Champions Provisional, limiting its use it to only six uses per season.
The rule change will mostly affect past Cup Champion Dale Jarrett, who is racing for the new team of Micheal Waltrip Racing this season in a Toyota which isn't carrying over any points from last year. This means he won't be able to rely on the past champions provisional to carry him through the season as he can only use it a max of 6 times and then make the remaining races on speed - unless they are in the top 35 of owner points that is. Too bad Mikey didn't get wind of this before he hired Dale away from RYR, because I think he may have done things differently. I believe that one of the major reasons Mikey hired Dale was because he was a past Champion and they could use the Past Champions Provisional.
This will affect Bobby Labonte as well, who is driving for Petty Enterprises and has struggled to stay in the top 35 the last few years.
Good thing they didn't do this change during D.W.'s farewell tour - he would have missed most of the races.
I think this is past due, now if they would only get rid of the guaranteed starting spots for the top 35 in Owner Points. You should be able to make the race on speed, period, and not on anything else. Earn your starting spot or go home!
