Could NASCAR Be The Next Big Sprint/NEXTEL Cut?

Will they have to cut NASCAR to help stop the bleeding?

That exclusive sponsor clause isn't looking too good now is it NASCAR?

Actually it would depend on which side of that clause you were on.

From ours, and AT&T's for that matter, if they fold their their tent the clause gets cashiered also.

That can only be a good thing in the long run.

I think 'cutting back' is simply a sign of the times and economy. If you don't like the exclusive licensing, I understand that. But to do away completely with them, would spell a significant drop in prize money for the race teams.

Conversely, the teams don't seem to want to spend less money. Something has to give.

okla,

Nothing wrong with being the 'official' sponsor that does not limit industry competitiors from sponsoring cars within the series, but when this 'official' sponsorhip hinders the development of potential sponsors then there is a problem. NASCAR relies on its teams to be competitive to put on good shows for the spectators so NASCAR can make money, and when they are reducing the already low sponsorship pools with their exclusive contracts then they are only hurting themselves as teams struggle to keep up with dimishing sponsorship dollars and become less competive thus putting on poorer and poorer shows.

You are right when you say teams don't want to spend less, and I agree, something is going to have to give sooner or later, and only NASCAR has the ability to do that since they are the sanctioning body.

How about a set budget for each team, sort of like salery caps in the NHL and NFL? Hmmm ... I might be onto something there.

Gotta love that request from Moni.

I checked and she/he has zero auto racing links listed and more importantly yours. Maybe I'm too touchy on this subject, but if someone asks me they better have mine posted first.

Anyway the "Sprint problem" seems to have gone away, at least 'til their contract runs out.

"Despite problems on Wall Street and in the marketplace, it appears that Sprint will honor its commitment to NASCAR.

I personally hope they get the telecommunications company out of primary sponsorship. They change names, merge with others, change logos, etc. way too much to have any hope for building a legendary name like "Winston Cup" has been.

Personally, I wish that they make it a named series like "Stanley Cup" or some such. Someone suggested that some time past & I think its a brilliant idea.

Rickr,
I agree, it is the Stanley Cup Grey Cup etc., not anything else. Talk about getting and identity for your sport. That is the way it should be.
