Greg Biffle NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion Interview – Phoenix International Raceway

Nationwide_phoenix_spring_medium

Taking advantage of teammate Carl Edwards engine problem, Greg Biffle took control of the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 and sped to his third Nationwide Series win at Phoenix International Raceway. The CitiFinancial Ford driver dodged a bullet in the Arizona desert when his Jack Roush team elected to keep him on the track during a late race yellow while just about everybody else headed for pit lane.

Greg Biffle:

You know I looked in my mirror; it’s a sinking feeling when you look in the mirror and the entire field just drove down pit road. You’re like well oh well we had a fast car and we had great pit stops but we just gave this one away because you know normally new tires will just go like heck well this particular tire if you give it five or six laps under caution to cool off  which we had when all of those guys pitted and with the lack of power with the restrictors that these cars have it makes it difficult to pass and once it went green and I saw how I could get away from the 38th I thought I had it in the bag at that point but then we kept getting all of those cautions and we ran the whole rest of the race under cautions. So I never really got a chance to really race with those guys to see them come up there on those new tires but I’m not sure they would have got there, even in 20 laps.

Because of three yellow flags, 17 of the final 21 laps we ran under caution. Jason Leffler and his number 38 Great Clips Toyota was the runner up and amused he got into position to challenge Biffle by not pitting on the next to last caution.

Jason Leffler:
I kind of laughed because we just went from eight to second really quick and to be honest I was surprised everybody pitted because track position was so important you know and tires were not much as track position so it worked out great for us.

Right behind Leffler at the line was Brad Keselowski whose finished in the same position now for three races in a row.

Brad Keselowski:
The last three we just executed in all fronts. You know are cars have been awesome all year so I’m just really proud of that and I just don’t really feel like there is any difference. I don’t feel like I’m doing anything different. It’s just sometimes things work out and you don’t know why and just like Carl sometimes, things just don’t work out and you don’t know why and the races isn’t always a fair and just sport.

Coming home forth a disappointed Joey Logano after his late race strategy to get fresh tires didn’t work out.

Joey Logano:
Came in and took four, a lot of guys stayed out, took two, last time I came here I stayed out and got bit so I said I’m not getting bit again. So I’m coming down pit road and I got bit by coming down pit road. So I don’t know, this place don’t like me I guess. We run good here all the time, and we were lucky coming down the fourth.

Finishing fifth it was it Kevin Harvick. The rest of the top 10 David Ragan, Brendan Gaughan, Justin Allgaier, Mike Bliss and Kyle Busch who now has the point lead by 47 over Carl Edwards. Greg Biffle’s 20th career Nationwide Series Victory marked a major milestone for Jack Roush. It was his 100th Nationwide Series win and the cat in the hat realizes he almost wasn’t there to see it.

Jack Roush:
Seven years ago it was basically over for me, I had the chance to keep going. I wound up in an air plane wreck under water and I was able to recover from that but based on one Larry Hicks who came and got me. Sergeant Major Larry Hicks in the Marine Corps and I’m thinking about Larry tonight, thinking about what it means to have these extra days.
