Found It!

Last week I wrote about Neil Bonnet's crash at Talladega in 1993 and how I had a picture of the car at RCR after the wreck, well I found it.  To be honest with you its not very good because I had a horrible camera at the time but here it is none-the-less.  Let me set the stage for you before you go looking at the picture.

It was summer 1993 (early Aug if I remember correctly) and we were coming back from Myrtle Beach and decided to head on over to Welcome N.C. to visit RCR.

When you go to RCR it is just off the main road about an industrial block and you have to cross a railroad track before you pull into the shop lot.  Well I was so focused on the shop I nearly drove in front of the train that was coming  - it was just the engine sans the cars, but it was moving at a good clip and it would have killed us for sure as we were driving my girlfriend's Sunbird at the time (her car had air conditioning and my didn't so we took her's).

Anyway we went in the reception area we were told that they don't do tours but we were allowed into the shop as long as we stayed within the yellow lines or else!

When you walked into shop you we were in the main assembly area and the yellow lines formed a box about 6ft by 10ft which we had to stay in.  If you looked left you could see the body shop with Luminas in primer and if you looked right there was a door with a special coded entry panel which was the engine room.  That was it - thanks so much for coming - but it was coooool to see all of that at that time.

You could also go over to the other building that was the museum and there were some pretty cool things in there.  I'll dig out the pictures and load them up in the near future.

So the picture is actually a panoramic shot of the main assembly area made out of two different pictures spliced together.  In the far right of the picture you'll see the 31 Bonnet car.  I was told by Chocolate Myers (Dale Earnhardt's gas man during races) that the car was put there after the race and it had been sitting there since and that they probably wouldn't keep anything from it once they got to it.

So there you have it so enjoy the picture - note the 28 sticker on the 'c' pillar of Dale's car in memory of Davey Allison.  Click on image to make larger.
