Rethinking Kyle Busch
Let me get this out there I am so happy that Kyle Busch was able to walk away from that last lap wreck. No true fan of the sport ever wants to see a driver get hurt in a race regardless of who they cheer for or not, if you do then you are not a true fan of the sport - just one sick individual.
I've also got to compliment Kyle on his refusal to comment about the wreck right after it happened - I mean haven't we all said something in the heat of the moment that we eventually ended up regretting? Kudos to him.
I know people, myself included, have been down on Kyle recently for his refusal to talk about things after a race, especially if it is one that didn't go his way, but I now realize what he is doing isn't selfish or immature but quite the opposite.
Kyle has been burned by both the media and fans about his comments in the past and by 'putting it on pause' for a day or two after a race allows him to cool off and get a better perspective on things (maybe even watch some replays). The people at JGR had to go through the growing pains of Tony Stewart and his often confrontational relationship with the media early in his Sprint Cup career and I'm sure they have been able to pass on some sound advice to Kyle so that Kyle doesn't have to experience what Tony did early on.
So my hat is off to Kyle and JGR for their handling of the media. Good stuff. So if you think Kyle's refusal to talk to the media after a race is immature and selfish think again, it is very mature and not selfish at all because he is taking his fans, sponsors, and racing organization into consideration by not talking to the media while he is still caught up in the heat of things. The man is a competitior and he is out there to win and sometimes it is hard to flip that internal switch off immediatly after something happens on the track.
It would be interesting to see what people would have thought of a young and brash Dale Earnhardt if he had as much media attention early in his career as young drivers like Busch, Logano, etc. have now. Makes you wonder doesn't it?
To be honest with you I wouldn't be surprised to see more drivers start doing what Kyle is doing now and you know what? Given the amount of coverage NASCAR gets in the mainstream media and the not so mainstreem, like this little ol'blog here, I can't blame them either. Can you?

Kyle
Kyle is a very nice young man. I had the pleasure of spending some time with him in Fontana and Las Vegas this year. He is passionate, smart, courteous and is happy to answer questions. We asked him about his worst crash ever and he related in such touching way the emotions he went through and how he felt blow by blow.
I have been a Jeff Gordon fan since he came on the scene, but I find myself now rooting for Kyle every week. People hated Jeff for his domination and now I guess it’s Kyle’s turn. He speaks his mind and tell the truth. If you do not want to hear his passion and frustration, then don’t shove a mic in front of his mouth after something bad happens to him on the track. Of course anyone that has emotions would be upset.
It made me so mad and sick to my stomach to see the crowd screaming in excitement when Kyle was wrecked. I held my breath fearing he was injured really bad. I was so relieved to see him walk out, and figured he might be in shock. After hearing the radio from Tony’s car it really upset me as well. I did not hear him inquire if Kyle was ok, all he said was I did not want to win like that. Denny, Kurt, and Carl and others were concerned for Kyle. I am anxious to hear from Kyle on the incident. After Tony got him loose and he moved to the low side, did Kyle really try and block him or was he just struggling to regain control of him car? Kyle was really sawing on the wheel and going that speed on a slick track even on the straight away it would not be easy to get control.
Yes Kyle has matured and if he does not want to address the media until his emotions are in check, more power to him. If he does address them, everyone will dissect everything he says and call him a sore loser anyway.
As I told Coach Gibbs and JD, I think that they are the best family for Kyle to be around. Maybe someday Kyle will have the fan respect he deserves, DW finally does.
I look for Kyle to win several championships in his career, so the fans better get used to him winning. He accepts nothing more, and if I was an owner that is who I would want racing for me!
Go Kyle!

I was Mad too
When people were cheering about Kyle’s wreck. That kind of menality ticks me off. It is one thing to cheer for a driver when you find out he is safe, but that is not what some of those losers in ths stands were doing that’s for sure!

Right. I loved watching Tony win, of course, but I couldn’t let myself really enjoy it until I knew Kyle (and Kasey, and….) were okay.

I think your post is dead-on.
If you put yourself in his shoes, do you really think you’re going to say anything nice after getting wrecked on the final lap? It would take me 3 days to come up with something family-friendly to say.
I’m not a Kyle Busch fan per se, but I do admire the guys determination and skill. I’ll agree with Renee48 in that I think this guy will eventually win a championship. The fact that he gets upset like he does is because he doesn’t enjoy losing. To me thats the mark of a champion.

To quote my beloved: “Is he supposed to say, ‘Oh, I’m overjoyed that I wrecked, my hands needed a break, and I have no room for any more trophies anyway’?” Seriously, what would any of us say on the road? What were many of us saying in our homes, just watching? I think it’s stupid when a reporter shoves a microphone into a driver’s face right after he leaves the care center.
Tony Stewart will always be my favorite, and the way he reacted just confirmed why. However, I also like Kyle a lot. Thank you for mentioning just how wrong it was that people cheered before they saw the net come down. I found that incredibly upsetting. Like him or not, that’s a human being behind the wheel, one who’s loved by other human beings.

Kyle Busch has since stated....
Yes he believes that he was “dumped” by Tony Stewart. What a namby pamby. That is my opinion of someone I believe to be a crybaby. It took how many days to state this. Did he not look at the replay. It is things like this that reinforce how I feel about “shrub” I guess Tony planted him.

A bunch of short memories here
Kyle pulled the same move Carl Edwards pulled at Talladega when the 99 pulled out to try and block Brad Keselowski. After he stepped out of his car, he agreed to an interview and admited the wreck was his fault.
Sub out Carl for Kyle and Keselowski for Smoke about 15 weeks later. Now I was willing to give a pass to Kyle if it meant cooler heads would prevail and he’d come to his senses.
Instead, he comes out 6 days later and feels the wreck was Tony’s fault? What kind of parallel universe is this prick living in?
No one is doubting his ability to drive a race car. And he certainly has the talent to win a championship. But his crybaby attitude that’s a huge turnoff to the rest of us “haters”. And it’s also a reason why I don’t expect him to win a championship anytime soon.

I don’t want to have to choose between Kyle and Tony, but it looks like I’ll really have to here. And of course I think Stewart was in the right. I can see where either one would blame the other, but both of them just wanted the same thing and were racing hard for it. Stewart was a class act in Victory Lane, and he made sure Kyle was okay before he really let himself celebrate that hard-earned win. Sure, Kyle’s still feeling the injuries right now and wants badly to make up for this finish at Chicagoland on Saturday. I also think he and any other driver deserves time to cool off before talking himself into fines. But I don’t understand why he’s gotten angrier as time’s gone on—usually it works the opposite way.

If you love him or hate him, you still have to admit; NASCAR cant afford Kyle to change

I'm not doubting that
Anytime you have a polarizing figure such as Kyle, you’ve given people one more reason to tune into a race to see what he’ll do, either positive or negative.
Still doesn’t mean I have to like the guy as a driver. :o)

Ok let's put this into perspective
did anyone actually read the transcript or watched the whole interview? I know I didn’t and I know how well things can be said and then manipulated by whoever for their own purposes (ie. create hits, sell newspapers, etc.). Until I actually see or read the whole interview I’m not passing judgement on what Kyle may or may not have said and in which context it was said in. I know from personal experience about things being said and then manipulated by someone else just so they could validate their own warped sense of reality so until I see, hear, or read the actual interview I’m not saying anything.

Glad to see that there are real race fans still out there.
Anyone that was a fan back in 2001 and can still cheer when someone (anyone) hits the wall is not a race fan. Kyle would be taking heat just the way Tony did, if he talked to the media immediately after a wreck or a loss and spoke his mind so you’re right. He’s doing the smart mature thing. No swatting cameras out of reporters hands or pushing guys, he just walks off. If the positions had been reversed between Tony and Kyle, the same thing probably would have happened because they were both racing for the win. It probably does grate on Kyle, but he was doing everything he could and he blocked one too many times. He’s lucky he didn’t end up in the fence like Carl at Dega. It could have very well gone that way. Kyle will mature, but I hope know one PC’s the fire and attitude out of him along the way.
