Open Race Thread: Grand-Am Series Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona | Daytona International Speedway

With all due respect to the Sprint All-Star Race, the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona is perhaps the most legitimate all-star race in the history of the business.

The event has always preceded most touring series' schedules, allowing champions from NASCAR, IndyCar and Formula1 to participate at different points in their careers. The 24-hour nature of the event requires a three-to-five driver rotation, forcing teams to seek several top-tier one-offs.

The most fascinating aspect of the race is the sheer number of top class drivers gathered in one garage at Daytona International Speedway. An argument could be made that the 24 Hours of Daytona boasts the largest gathering of world class auto racers in any location at one time. With roughly 60 teams at four drivers per car, the 24 Hours of Daytona will see about 240 of the world's best drivers turn fast laps at the World Center of Speed.

The All-Star nature of the race is best explained by Wikipedia.

NASCAR stars such as Rusty Wallace, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Kyle Petty, Mark Martin, and Robby Gordon have all participated, with Martin and Gordon notably winning several class victories for Roush Racing in the GTO class in the 1980s-90s. In 2001, Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. teamed together in a Corvette, just weeks before Earnhardt's fatal crash at the same track in the 2001 Daytona 500.

Indianapolis 500 winners Buddy Rice, Dan Wheldon, Hélio Castroneves, Juan Pablo Montoya, Sam Hornish, Jr., and Dario Franchitti are all recent participants. Other recent IndyCar drivers such as Paul Tracy, Sébastien Bourdais, Danica Patrick, Jimmy Vasser, John Andretti, and Graham Rahal.

Grand-Am Racing is split into two distinct formulas. Look at it as two different races taking place on the same track at the same time. The Daytona Prototype cars (DP) use less expensive materials and technologies and the car's simple aerodynamics reduce the development and testing costs.

Specialist chassis makers like Dallara, Lola and Riley provide the DP cars for teams and the engines are branded under the names of major car companies like Pontiac, Lexus, Ford, BMW, and Porsche.

Meanwhile, the Gran Turismo cars (GT) are closer in appearance and design to their street counterparts. Recent Daytona entries have included BMW M3s and M6s, Porsche 911s, Chevy Camaros and Corvettes. It could be argued that the GT class is closer to the "Win on Sunday and sell on Monday" motto than the NASCAR Cup Series ever was.

Watching the much faster DP cars attempt to navigate around the GT cars is one of the most fascinating aspects of Grand-Am Racing and one that will ultimately decide the outcome of the race.

And let's face it, approximately four months after Homestead, any form of racing is a welcome addition. The Speed network television broadcast starts at 3:00 p.m. EST with the green flag set to drop at 3:30 p.m. The race is timed and will last approximately 24 hours. Delays requiring a red flag will stop the clock and a safety car will be in effect for all caution periods. Local yellows will also be utilized for isolated incidents.

The complete rundown of the rules can be found here.

A list of participating NASCAR drivers by Rolex 24 teams as well as a starting lineup can be found after the jump.

Let's rock.

Are we underway yet? I'm working the Senior Bowl today. =(

I’m so starved for racing that I was tempted to miss out on the game to stay home and watch a sports car endurance race.

Psh. It's here. But you're right.

We’re about a week and a half away from seeing ARCA cars practice at Daytona.

And I REALLY can’t wait for that.

I cant wait for Daytona to open up.

The world will get back to being normal. Everything just seems so different without it.

Well I've watched about and hour of it so far

and I’m lovin’ it. I’ve been a big fan of this race for a long time now, and certainly wish I was there, but as it stands I’m watching it on TV yet again.

Can’t believe that the Suntrust car is in the garage right now – waaayyy too many laps to get back unless somehing big happens to the front runners :(

caution is out!

Busy working on stuff for work, and tuned out the race for a bit and look what happens :(

I'm one UFC show away from doing a commercial-free marathon session of touring car racing.

Can’t wait to see cars back on the track.

What a long exhausting day!

Awkward shot of Kevin Harvick at the UFC show in Chicago.

They plugged the Daytona 500 so I’ll happily take it.

No one qualified the car despite it being on the entry list. I'm not sure what the resolution was.

I just got to the green flag. I decided to watch the pre-race show. It was darn good this year.

To be completely honest though, I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to Grand-Am.

My first real exposure to them was last year when I worked the IndyCar race at Barber Motorsports Park. Grand-Am served as the enhancement series and I absolutely fell in love with the cars.

I can’t wait to learn even more between this race and my return trip to BMP.

Pocono doesn't last too long...

…if you see it in person and/or have enough various distractions.

Unfortunately, I was distracted enough over the weekend that I didn’t get to catch any of this year’s 24 hours. Just getting caught up now finding out what occurred. Although I personally can’t seem to relate to those types of cars too well, it would be neat to see them race in person at least once in my life.

Hope everyone enjoyed! Counting down the days until Speedweeks, and getting a little bit of a racing fix in myself next weekend in Atlantic City!

To me, racing has never been about the cars.

If you can learn and relate to the drivers, that’s what will ultimately hook you. I grew up on stock cars but can’t tell you a thing about how they work. Dammit Jim, I’m a journalist not a mechanic. (Obscure Star Trek reference)

You’ll learn to find something to like about the cars as long as you have a vested interest in the personalities beneath them. That’s how I got hooked onto NASCAR. I was hooked by guys like Gordon, Earnhardt, Martin and Jarrett.

Personalities certainly do play a major role as well.

That’s probably another factor why I haven’t entirely followed Grand-Am or American Le Mans in the past. There’s so many personalities to learn at once during an endurance race that I just never could seem to get my head around all of it. Nevertheless, I would like to go see a Grand-Am race one of these years because even though it’s a different style it still is racing! I used to somewhat follow the SCCA Trans-Am Series in the 1990s because many of their top drivers would appear in the NASCAR races as the road course ringers. I also followed it because of the Ford Mustang vs. Chevrolet Camaro battle that went on for a few years.

I know far from enough about cars and how they work as well. I’ve related to the drivers to begin with, but even though the cars in just about any series don’t look like what are driven on the street anymore I’ve always related with the particular models. For example, my parents used to drive subcompact/compact cars and I now drive a Cavalier, so I always related with the old NASCAR Goody’s Dash Series and have continued to follow it even after NASCAR dropped the series. Then again, I enjoy Modifieds and Sprint Cars which look nothing like anything driven on the street so I suppose I’m contradicting myself a little bit.
