Open Race Thread: ARCA Series Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 | Daytona International Speedway
Update: 2:50 p.m. EST - Notes from the ARCA Series drivers meeting can be found in the comments section.
DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The ARCA Racing Series has a unique place in the grand scheme of NASCAR's ladder system. With its blend of short tracks, dirt tracks, and superspeedway action, ARCA serves as the last link between NASCAR and its short track racing heritage.
Many of the same names that Ranting and Raving reported on at the Snowball Derby will also attempt to take the checkered flag for today's Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway. To compare, Five Flags Speedway is a half-mile speedway. Daytona -- as you may recall is 2.5 miles -- with 32 degree banking in the corners.
ARCA could boast the most the most versatile drivers in motorsports if they truly wanted to. The Series competes on short tracks, dirt tracks, superspeedways and road courses.
Qualifying for the event was scheduled for Friday afternoon and witnessed Sean Corr secure his first career pole in major stock car racing. Ryan Reed, Steve Blackburn, Tom Hessert and Chris Windom round out the starting top-5.
Cale Gale is the 2010 Snowball Derby polesitter and a former Kevin Harvick Inc. developmental driver. He's done a little bit of everything in his 10-year career. He has not won at Daytona. He'll sixth for Eddie Sharp Racing, with equipment purchased from KHI. He was 13th in final practice.
Frank Kimmel has won nine ARCA championships but is also winless at Daytona. Kimmel doesn't believe in legacies but believes his career is incomplete until he wins at the famed 2.5-mile superspeedway. He was second-fastest in practice and qualified in 17th.
"Daytona is a big one on my personal bucket list," Kimmel said. "It's the grandest stage in motorsports and we'd definitely love to win it. We're a little behind on our speedway program but ThorSport carries a proven track record. We definitely have a shot at coming away with a real good finish."
And then there's Bobby Gerhart.
Gerhart has won five of the last seven ARCA Daytona 200s and seven overall. He initially qualified on the pole for today's race but his time was disallowed after failing post-qualifying inspections. He qualified for the race based on a provisional and will roll off in 42nd.
Gerhart posted the fastest time in Saturday happy hour at 184.102 mph.
The Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. at Daytona International Speedway. SPEED will begin television coverage at 4 p.m.
The complete starting lineup can be found after the jump. See you in the comments section!

Notes from the Drivers Meeting:
- #02 Josh Williams was a little behind but arrived just in time.
- Iggy Katona’s son, Ryan. Dave Dayton, Bill Venturini, Bob Keselowski, Justin Allgaier and Patrick Sheltra recognized as former Series champions.
-54 drivers attempted to make the field. 43 succeeded. The Series extended their congratulations to those who made the cut.
- The Series asked that drivers exercise patience and respect. They were asked to drive as if they had to load up and race next weekend at Talladega.
- Drivers asked to not bump draft in the corners. Once will result in a warning and second will result in a black flag.
- Drivers reminded that there’s another race tonight and to not tear up the infield grass.
-No questions from the drivers or their representatives

Prediction time? Betting against Bobby Gerhart would be foolish.
It doesn’t matter that he starts in 42nd. It wouldn’t matter if he started three laps down.

I always gave Milka a hard time in IndyCar but she’s proven to be quite the wheel(wo)man in a stock car. What a save! #arca

So much for Chitwood's request that ARCA not tear up the grass. Sorry, Joie.

Paying my dues. =)

Assumed that the Dillon hype would dissapear from ARCA now that both have graduated. I was wrong.
I’m not a believer in their talent.

Completely disagree! They may not be a Jeff Gordon or Kyle Busch, but they are both champions. Not alot of people can say that.
Time will tell. Scott Speed would have won 15 races in their cars.

But what is happening with the Dillons is exactly what needed to happen to Speed
Speed was brought too quickly to Cup, and now he’s treated like damaged goods. The Dillons started in ARCA, proved capable of moving to Trucks, and now both have done so. And Austin certainly proved he was capable of the Nationwide ride he now possesses. Perhaps Speed should try to find a competitive ARCA ride and reestablish his credentials to everyone, rather than lounge around in a start-and-park Nationwide ride.

Agreed. I went back and watched some 2008 ARCA Races.
Speed has incredibly raw talent — especially on short tracks.

He woulda been the ARCA champion if he hadn’t got Stenhouse’d. It wasn’t until last season that I started respecting Stenhouse. The crap he pulled in that final race of the 2008 season was the biggest chicken-shit move I’ve ever seen.
It's really night and day. I don't even recognize him anymore.
And that’s a good thing.

At least in tandem racing, you know you got a guy that will go with you. I hate seeing a guy get hung out late in the race. What’s the point in pulling out to try to pass if you are just going to end up at the end of the line?

What an incrdible way to kick off the stock car portion of Speedweeks.
Incredible finish, bad race.
ARCA officials have to find a way to force these drivers to pass each other. This is the second-straight year that drivers were afraid to duck out.

Bobby Gerhart walks into the media center and asks "Did that really just happen?
“It was a stupid mistake that cost us the pole,” he continued. “ARCA puts us in a box and it’s our obligation to play in it. We screwed up.”
He also talked about what he saw coming out of turn 4.
“We decided that no one was going to remember me finishing fifth and I decided to go for it. I didn’t anticipate everyone running out of fuel. It just played out that way. I got a shot from behind and drifted up.
“It worked out for us today.”

Eight is Great!
Sorry I didn’t get a chance to join in on the thread today. Went to a friend’s house to watch the race. I wonder if the neighbors complained about the noise that we made jumping up and down and shouting during the last corner of that last lap.
I still don’t know how all of those events occurred, but I’m 1 for 1 with my Daytona picks…somehow.
That race was a lot like a poker tournament: periods of boredom with a few thrilling moments interspersed. Something needs to be done about how the ARCA-style cars race on the freshly paved surface at Daytona. Even the best in the ARCA business had a hard time successfully making passes when almost all the cars were single file and glued to the inside yellow lines.
