Open Race Thread: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Gatorade Duel at Daytona | Daytona International Speedway
Updated: 1:05 p.m. EST - Question and answers from the pre-race drivers meeting.
Weather permitting...
For 10 drivers, Thursday is the most important day of their racing lives.
Today's Gatordade Duel at Daytona will determine the Daytona fates of Kenny Wallace, Dave Blaney, Michael Waltrip, Bill Elliott, Joe Nemechek, J.J. Yeley, Mike Wallace, Robby Gordon, Robert Richardson Jr. and Michael McDowell.
Only four of the 10 will qualify for the Daytona 500.
The other 35 drivers are already locked in, headlined by Duel pole sitters Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle. Assuming both drivers will not go to a backup car, they will start the Daytona 500 on the front row regardless of where they finish.
Positions 3-43 are yet to be decided, laying the foundation for an exciting mix of drivers racing for their Daytona lives and those hoping to build momentum for Sunday's Daytona 500.
For fans, Thursday is about maximizing your value. There are two races at a combined 350 miles, with the added bonus of big pack racing, and no event on the schedule holds more excitement or anticipation as the Gatorade Duel at Daytona.
Duel #2
Greg Biffle and Casey Mears will lead the field to the start of Gatorade Duel #2.
Much like teammate Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle will weigh the opportunity to test race conditions versus taking care of his car. The second Duel is traditionally a safer race, a fact not lost on Biffle's team.
Three cars will go to the back of the pack -- Kasey Kahne, for going to a backup car. Bill Elliott and Clint Bowyer will go to the rear of the field for an engine change and failing post-qualifying tech respectively.
Duel #1
Carl Edwards and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will share the front row for the first duel. The Blue Ovals were fastest in single-car runs but have yet to prove they can win in the big Daytona packs. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been the fastest Chevrolet throughout Speedweeks. What a statement it would be if Earnhardt Jr. could win his Duel and stake an early claim on the Harley J. Earl Trophy.
Danica Patrick will also make her unofficial Sprint Cup debut in her first race for Tommy Baldwin Racing powered by Stewart-Hass. Patrick has proven herself capable of contending for plate race victories. But she hasn't experienced anything quite like the big-pack she'll find herself in today. She rolls off 17th.
Go-or-go-homers in Duel 1 include: Mike Wallace, Robby Gordon, Michael McDowell, and Michael Waltrip.
Weather Permitting
Weather is a concern as a line of showers is passing just north of the track. The storm is projected to miss the speedway but it's worth keeping an eye on. The projected forecast called for a 10% chance of rain.
The Gatorade Duel at Daytona is set to begin at 2 p.m. EST and will be broadcast live on Speed. See you in the comments section!

Drivers Meeting:

Kurt Busch asked the meeting’s only question. He wanted clarification about the procedure for getting caught on pit road as the caution comes out.
“If you haven’t reached your stall by time the caution waves, you are permitted to stay on the right side of pit road without having to go to the back of the field. You will, however, lose whatever position you will have lost before the yellow comes out.” – John Darby

NASCAR's been a lot more subtle about it.

Remember when they were mixing it up every lap for the lead? Yeah, me too. Then everyone said they hated it. Now we get this awesome single-file racing! Wahoo!!
Can't be helped. The two-car tandem was the same way until the final ten laps.
This still beats racing at any intermediate track. Don’t tell me you’ve already forgotten Kentucky.

What the hell is Hammond talking about?
I’ve seen a ton of guys let go of the wheel before they hit. That was not something new.
"Baseball statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything."
Yes, but can you let go of a wheel if you have MAMMERIES?! THIS IS A GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR WOMEN EVERYWHERE. DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND. KENNYMIKEYDANICAKENNYMIKEYDANICA

Implying he had any to begin with.

I personally like Hammond
Just not when he talks
"Baseball statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything."
What causes bigger ratings than Danica Patrick in NASCAR & crashing? Danica Patrick crashing in NASCAR. Just wait, FOX will promo the heck out of that crash. You’ll see so many replays of it the next 3 days you’ll want to puke.

Yeah I had to Google that one, too
still no clue

Robby Gordon:
“Terry gets in on a champions provisional and I don’t agree with that unless he’s still with the original team he won it with. The problem with him getting in is that he’s talking a spot away from a guy who’s fast and who’s team worked really hard.
“But those are the rules and we have to play by it.”

I don't entirely disagree with that. Perhaps there should be a ten-year cap on past champions provisional.

I wouldn’t object to this.

That's more than fair
and I am as sentimental as anyone
"Baseball statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything."
Ditto. I'm a huge Terry Labonte fan. That championship was nearly 20 years ago. His other title, roughy 30 years ago.
Think about that for a second.

gah
we’re gettin’ old
"Baseball statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything."
I do. A championships is an amazing accomplishment. You were the best driver over a 10 month season. You deserve to race.
With that being said, I think the whole provisional system as a whole is a sham. NASCAR should be locking in the top 12 drivers from the prior year’s chase, top 12 in current year points & the most recent champion not in that top 12, and that’s all. You want to be guaranteed into a race, make the chase; otherwise, get up on the wheel and make the race. Will that result in Jeff Gordon or Dale Earnhardt Jr missing a race? Highly unlikely, but still some Friday drama every week.
Robby:
" I have respect for Terry. We’re a small team too. I guess I should have hired Kurt Busch and earned us a free ride too."

Feel Good Story
Well, Robby Gordon ruined his feel good story by, well, being Robby Gordon. Said his ride is for sale to anyone who didn’t make the race & wants to buy it. Sad.
Yeap. Jenna asks, "Wait, Robby. Are you serious?"
His response, “Hell yeah. Have his people call my people.”
