Open Race Thread: Daytona 500 presented by NASCAR

Yesterday: DAYTONA BEACH, FL - FEBRUARY 25: Tony Stewart, driver of the #33 Oreo/Ritz Chevrolet, is pushed by Elliott Sadler, driver of the #2 OneMain Financial Chevrolet, during the NASCAR Nationwide Series DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway on February 25, 2012 in Daytona Beach, Florida. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

Update: 11:18 am EST Monday - Let us see if we can get it in today. See you in the comments - if you're not at work this evening that is. Just in case you haven't heard yet, the race is set to start at approx. 7:00 pm EST as rain is in the forecast for this afternoon.

Update: 5:06 EST - The 54th Running of the Daytona 500 has been postponed until Noon EST on Monday. For the first time in event history, the race will not run on it's scheduled day.

Weather permitting...

Assuming they do get it started (and completed) I think it is going to be a good race.

Picking a winner at any restrictor plate track is a crap shoot, but my favorite to win is Tony Stewart. He is starting to become the Dale Earnhardt of his generation, in that he can win anything at Daytona except the 500 and just like Earnhardt you shouldn't bet against Stewart as he stands a good chance of winning the darn thing.

As far as a dark horse pick goes I'm going with Danica. No I'm not jumping on the band wagon, I think she has just as good of a shot as Trevor Bane did last year - in better equipment.

The reasons to pick Danica are tremendous;

  • She isn't points racing so she can go for broke
  • She isn't trying to impress a new sponsor by playing it safe, Go Daddy has been with her a while in open wheels and they'd love to see her go for broke
  • She is with an established Championship organization (Stewart/Haas) that has given her good equipment
  • She has a car owner in Tony Stewart that is also a favorite to win the 500 and he is not afraid to draft with her
  • She has a Nationwide owner in Dale Jr. that is also a favorite to win the 500 that is not afraid to draft with her either

Now we just have to wait and see if we can get the race in.

See you on the other side.

Got some time to kill.

Does anyone know when NTG 2012 will be coming out? I’m hoping it will be much less of a fail than 2011.

It's official

Trevor Bayne in now my favorite driver. Have always liked the underdog. Listened to him while he was sitting in with the guys in the booth during the rain delay, and he represents himself, and the Woods Brother’s organization well. Too bad they have sponsorship issues. But after seeing him on this show, I’d expect sponsors to be loving him. Wouldn’t be surprised if he got a full time gig next year, and that the time he spent on today’s show, had something to do with it.
What do you think?

I haven't understood

why the Woods haven’t been able to fill out their sponsorship package with Baine and last year’s win already.

Agree, that’s a better package to get on board with than a number of others out there, between Cup and N-wide.

It's not up to the Wood Bros. That car is actually owned by Richard Petty and managed by Jack Roush.

Roush is having a hard time attracting sponsors right now. Not even Matt Kenseth, the 2003 Cup Series champion and three-race winner in 2011 has a full-sponsorship commitment.

They’re struggling.

Thanks to both of you

by alfresco on Feb 26, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

He's got to get a full-time sponsor for that Nationwide Series program first.

A lot of that is dependent on his points standing after the third race of the season. After that, his sponsorship runs dry.

He told us that he’s hoping to be leading the points as to force Jack make something happen i.e. fund the car out of his own pocket.

But I completely agree with you. It’s a crime that the defending Daytona 500 champion and a super personable kid can’t get a deal. I think we’re all rooting for Trevor Bayne.

Oh!

So it’s depends on his points after the first 3 races. I thought it was already clear, they needed another sponser, to continue after 3.
I know nothing of the Nationwide series, never have followed that. So he has sponsor trouble there too. Never could tell it by his demeanor. Kid seems wonderfully upbeat.

This Top 10 Daytona 500s list has me thinking

about the best races I have been to.

To cure my boredom, here are some of my favorite moments from races I have attended.

1. Cup Series at Richmond – September 2001
Near the end of the race, Ricky Rudd bumped Rusty Wallace out of the lead. A few laps later, Kevin Harvick got into Rudd and almost turned him around. Rudd was able to save it, run down Harvick, and bump his way around him on his way to a win at his hometown track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtubUzdjyzo
Rudd and Harvick met again at RIR two years later, but the result was not as friendly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cvgEIk1nH0

2. Cup Series at Dover – September 1998
Mark Martin dominated just a few weeks after his father, stepmother, and sister died in a plane crash.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWFQEJ58PyA

3. Busch Series at Rockingham – February 1998
This was my first time experiencing a NASCAR race in person outside of the local tracks. A young hotshot Tony Stewart and an unheard-of, barely sponsored Matt Kenseth, bumped, banged, and fought back-and-forth for the last few laps. Kenseth gave Stewart a bump coming off of turn four and slide around him for the win.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNc42-CMrB4

4. Cup Series at Richmond – September 1998
Virginia driver Jeff Burton and the hated Jeff Gordon battled to a side-by-side finish. This race was a rare example of heated but clean racing to the finish on a short-temper-fueled short track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhPhJv0ZX5A

5. Busch Series at Richmond – Sept. 2001
Early in the race, Greg Biffle punted Jay Sauter coming off of turn two. With the laps winding down, Sauter took a hard right into the door of Biffle coming off of turn four. When the cars came to rest, Biffle jumped out of his car and took a (rather girly) swing at Sauter.
This happened right in front of me. I remember commending Biffle for at least going after Sauter with his helmet off. But come on! At least let him get out of the car first.
9:00 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhpHVlPOaEo

6. Cup Series at Richmond – Sept. 1999
Tony Stewart’s first win.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h8BqPfHGwE

7. Cup Series at Martinsville – Oct. 2006
More for the adventure of the trip itself than for the actual race. Long, long story here.

8. Cup Series at Bristol – April 2011
Again – more for the trip than the actual race. Made the trip without spending a single penny.

9. Cup Series at Richmond – Sept. 2011
Classic short track racing all night.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TH1jCXF98I

10. All-Star Race at Charlotte – May 2010
Kyle Busch ranting and fighting with his own teammate. Priceless.

Depends

if it was just faulty gauges as is suspected probably not but if the gauges were good and something went bad internally i would say yes and even being a gordon fan i am questioning his assessment that is a bad water temp gauge if thats the case he should have still scene it puke a bunch of water out before overheating and letting go

the track was on fire and the foam to put out the fire isn’t excatly the best stuff for asphalt. This could very well be done

How could the foam be bad? I know about the burning jet fuel, that had to cut into the track like a hot knife through butter.

Aqueous AFFF Foam

Is it this stuff?

This fire fighting foam is a non-corrosive, synthetic concentrate that produces a long lasting, dense foam that offers:

VAPOR SUPPRESSION
SMOTHERING AND COOLING
SUPERIOR WATER RETENTION

FOR USE AT 3% DILUTION

Fire Fighting Foams
Non-toxic *Non-corrosive *Biodegradable

Designed for use on Class A and Class B (flammable liquid) fires when fire fighting foam is mixed with fresh water, sea water or brackish water.
Fire Fighting Foam Directions:

For use on Class A and Class B fires involving non-polar liquids such as gasoline, fuel oil, benzene, mineral spirits and other hydrocarbons. Dilute this fire fighting foam concentrate to 3% using standard inductors or other proportioning system. Also use this concentration for smothering and vapor suppression when fighting conventional Class A fires. May also be used at 1% concentration to increase the wetting and penetrating ability of water and is compatible with most wetting agents. Fire fighting foam may also be stored premixed at the correct solution for ease of use.

This fire fighting foam concentrate is compatible with surfactants and tank protectors. Do not mix with alcohol or any other anti-freeze. Store at temperatures above 35°F.
