So we finally got the chance to witness the new-old-NASCAR. The 52nd running of the Great American race was ever the event but did more to raise questions and skepticism than produce the solutions that the race was meant for. I firmly believe that NASCAR is on the right path but the sanctioning body absolutely can not get complacent now.

Richard Childress made headlines this past week, announcing Bass Pro Shops as a sponsor for grandson Austin Dillon's Truck Series ride.

The team has been making a lot of headlines since the start of the new year, bringing back the famed black no. 3 to one of NASCAR's top circuits.

One would think that a fan base as nostalgic and tradition-laced as NASCAR's would welcome such a move but that's not entirely the case as many have denounced the move, claiming that nepotism gave him the ride and that only Dale Earnhardt Jr. was appropriate for such a ride.

I am not one of those people.

One name conspicuous by his absence is Dale Earnhardt Jr. Many of you have emailed me asking about  his Twitter availiablility. Straight from the horse's mouth, there is none.

"I don't have anything on Twitter as far as I know of" Earnhardt said. "There's tons of impostors out there. I don't have a MySpace, a Twitter or none of that crap. There's a bunch of impostors out there though that you have to beware of. I really would never get into social networking -- it's just a dangerous area to be involved in, especially if you're high profile so I think it's smart for me to stay in the regular social networks -- the ones I can see, you know."

That is pretty surprising to me considering how hip Earnhardt's people try to portray him. In any case, don't expect to see his name popping up here any time soon.

Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson: They are NASCAR's modern day Rat Pack and they run the streets here. Jimmie Johnson (Dean Martin) led this pack all day on Sunday afternoon grabbing the Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway. Johnson took the lead from Hendrick/Rat Pack teammate Jeff Gordon on lap 244 and ran away over the final six to secure his fifth Cup victory of 2006. He likely also secured his fourth championship on Sunday, barring any unlikely #48 mistakes or accidents over the final six.
